AFRICAN PLAINS GAME SAFARI
Roy Huntington March 6, 2024
Africa. The word alone conjures up images of vast savannas, towering mountains, and exotic wildlife. For many hunters, an African safari is the ultimate dream trip. I was fortunate enough to realize that dream recently on a plains game safari in South Africa.
The journey was long, but the experience was unforgettable. From the thrill of the stalk to the camaraderie of the campfire, every moment was etched into my memory. Here is a day-by-day account of my African adventure.

Arriving in Johannesburg
After a grueling 15-hour flight from Atlanta, we finally touched down in Johannesburg. The anticipation was palpable as we cleared customs and met our outfitter. We loaded our gear into the truck and began the scenic drive to our hunting concession in the Limpopo province.
The landscape changed dramatically as we left the city behind. Rolling hills gave way to dense bushveld, and we spotted our first wildlife - a herd of impala grazing near the road.

Packing and Preparation
The weeks leading up to the trip were a blur of packing and preparation. I spent hours at the range fine-tuning my rifle and practicing from various shooting positions. Selecting the right gear was crucial - from comfortable boots to lightweight clothing suitable for the African sun.
I also spent time studying the different plains game species we would be hunting, learning about their habits and anatomy to ensure clean, ethical shots.

The First Stalk
Our first day in the bush started early. We were up before dawn, sipping coffee and watching the sunrise over the savanna. Our professional hunter (PH) spotted a nice blesbok in the distance, and the stalk was on.
We crept through the tall grass, using the sparse cover to close the distance. My heart pounded as we finally got within range. The shot was true, and I had my first African trophy.

The Elusive Kudu
The greater kudu is often referred to as the "Grey Ghost" of the African bush. They are notoriously elusive, disappearing into the thick brush at the slightest hint of danger.
We spent hours tracking a massive bull, following his tracks through the dense thorns. Just as we were about to give up, he stepped out into a small clearing. It was a moment of pure magic, a testament to the beauty and wildness of Africa.

A Successful Safari
As the safari came to an end, I reflected on the incredible experiences of the past few weeks. I had taken some magnificent trophies, but more importantly, I had forged lifelong friendships and gained a deep appreciation for the African wilderness.
The memories of this trip will stay with me forever. I know that I will return to Africa one day, drawn back by the irresistible call of the wild.
