Emergency Preparedness 101: Get Ready Before Trouble Starts!
Every family should consider having an Emergency Action Plan. Sometimes that means staying in and hunkering down. Other times it means evacuating the area. Regardless of the plan, you need to prepare well in advance of a major emergency like a hurricane or an earthquake. You can't just run out to the store and expect to get everything you need in the minutes before a storm hits.
A true disaster, whether man-made or natural, has the potential to shut down the power grid and disrupt the supply chain for days or even weeks. Preparing your home in advance will help you weather the storm and keep your family safe until order is restored.
The Most Critical Resource - Water
You can live without food for a while, but you can't survive without water for long. Most survival experts recommend having at least one gallon of water per person per day. It's best to have a combination of bottled water and larger storage containers.
You should also have a plan for purifying water if your tap water becomes contaminated or you have to rely on natural sources. Boiling is the most reliable method, but you should also have water purification tablets or a portable water filter on hand.
Food - The Other Essential
While you can survive longer without food, it's still essential to have a supply of non-perishable food on hand. Canned goods, dry pasta, rice, and beans are all good options. Don't forget to include comfort foods, especially if you have children. It's important to rotate your food supply regularly so that it doesn't expire. Keep a running inventory of what you have and use the oldest items first.
Let There Be Light - Flashlights
When the power goes out, you'll need a reliable source of light. Flashlights and headlamps are essential for navigating in the dark. Make sure you have plenty of extra batteries on hand. Candles can also be useful, but they pose a fire hazard, so use them with caution. Chemical light sticks are another good option for emergency lighting.
Also Vital For Staying Alive - Medical Kits
A well-stocked first-aid kit is crucial for treating minor injuries and preventing infections when medical help is unavailable. Your kit should include bandages, gauze, antiseptic wipes, antibiotic ointment, pain relievers, and any prescription medications your family needs.
It's also a good idea to take a first-aid and CPR class so you know how to use the items in your kit effectively.
As Vital As Staying Alive - Personal Protection Gear
In a survival situation, you may need to protect yourself and your family. A firearm can provide security and peace of mind. Make sure you are properly trained in its use and store it safely. Other personal protection gear, such as pepper spray or a sturdy knife, can also be useful for self-defense and everyday tasks.
The Basic Kit - Have A Bail Out Bag
A bail out bag, also known as a bug out bag, should contain all the essential items you need to survive for at least 72 hours. This includes water, food, shelter, fire-starting materials, a first-aid kit, and navigation tools.
Keep your bail out bag in a readily accessible location so you can grab it and go if you need to evacuate quickly.
Preparing Your Home - Survival Mindset
Being prepared is as much about mindset as it is about having the right gear. Take the time to think through potential scenarios and plan accordingly. Discuss your emergency plan with your family and practice it regularly.
By taking these steps, you can give yourself and your loved ones the best chance of surviving and thriving in any emergency.
